In recognition for its commitment to workplace wellbeing, Mount Anvil achieved a Gold award at the Workplace Wellbeing Awards 2018/19 for the second year running, having jumped up from a Bronze Award the first year they participated (2016/17). Mind’s Gold Award is given to employers who have successfully embedded mental health into their policies and practices, demonstrating a long-term and in-depth commitment to staff mental health.
Roxanne Thorpe, 30, from London, the driving force behind Mount Anvils initiatives took home the Wellbeing Lead Award at Mind’s 2018/19 Workplace Wellbeing Awards on 30 April. She was awarded for her efforts in championing mental health and promoting wellbeing at Mount Anvil. Through a range of activities, such as signing the Time to Change pledge, organising health screenings and delivering mental health first aid sessions, Roxanne has continuously challenged the stigma attached to mental health in the workplace.
Roxanne Thorpe has worked at Mount Anvil for two years and is currently Occupational Health & Wellbeing Coach. This role supports the physical and mental wellbeing of the workforce which are currently spread across multiple site in London and Manchester.
Roxanne has direct experience of her own, as she suffered poor mental health throughout her childhood years that manifested itself as severe anxiety and a panic disorder. This shaped her desire to help others and recognise that what some people find easy and take for granted, others really struggle with. It shows that mental health does not mean you remain restricted it can be your catalyst.
On receiving the award, Roxanne said:
“I’m delighted to win this Award in recognition of the work I’ve been doing to promote wellbeing across Mount Anvil. Conversations around mental health are now normal within the organisation and any members of staff who are struggling with mental health or just want to talk now feel much more comfortable to do so.”
Roxanne was nominated by John Gore, Health and Safety Manager and Roxanne’s line manager. John added:
“I’m so glad to see Roxanne win this well-deserved award. She is so passionate about mental health and wellbeing and has been instrumental in normalising conversations about mental health. Her Time to Change Pledge Signing video shown at our staff briefing event was very powerful and had an amazing reception from colleagues, bringing further positive attitude and awareness of the topic. She constantly shows that support is there for all employees, she has been giving Mental Health First Aid training sessions to ensure that all of our sites have a first aider and champion to increase the network of support available within the business. Roxanne has introduced a new campaign every quarter over the past 12 months, including topics around suicide awareness, depression and anxiety, combat of negative thought patterns, Tea, Toast & Talk and many more.
“Personally I feel she would always be there if I needed her and can only assume that many others feel the same. She has been a breath of fresh air since joining Mount Anvil and we are so glad to have her as a colleague and source of support.”
Mind’s Workplace Wellbeing Awards are a benchmark of best policy and practice, celebrating the good work employers are doing to promote and support positive mental health, and providing key recommendations on the specific areas where there is room to improve.
This year marked the third annual Awards, with over 100 organisations taking part. The ceremony took place at The Ham Yard Hotel in Soho, Central London, and was hosted by TV presenter and Mind Ambassador Anna Williamson.
