The development that keeps on winning

Every time one of our developments is garlanded by an institution that we respect, the office is abuzz – we love our thoughtfully designed homes, and we know our customers do, so it’s the icing on the proverbial cake when the silverware follows.  Dollar Bay in Canary Wharf keeps on providing those proud moments, and at the London Planning Awards this year it was for two very different facets of the development:

Best New Iconic Scheme:

Our visionary architects, SimpsonHaugh, dreamed up a ‘pair of crystals’, separated by a golden fracture that brings natural daylight to communal spaces for this addition to Canary Wharf’s skyline.  That structure catches the light, reflects the movement of the water and offers something hugely distinctive to the South Dock.  You need to be distinctive to be named an icon, and we’re over the moon with that new epithet. 

Our residents, as well as benefitting from dual – in some homes triple – aspect views, amenities and convenient location of Dollar Bay, are now living in a landmark building that beat Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery and the new Bloomberg HQ.  Marcus Bate, our Investment Director, said “it was particularly pleasing to be recognised in two distinct categories, getting a nod from the judging panel twice for design and planning work that has truly raised the bar in our world-class city.”

Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Environmental Planning: 

Dollar Bay is ingeniously practical, as well as beautiful.  The panel called out the “ingenious approach to cooling a building” which involves using dock water to reduce the carbon footprint by 23% and generate significant energy savings.  It’s a first for London and a bonus for homeowners – and the planet.  Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of London First, said: “These projects are helping to build London’s future, from new ideas for communal spaces to using the capital’s docks to help cool a building. As London continues to grow, we’ll need ingenuity and imagination to build the places people want to live and work in.”

Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, said: “My congratulations to this year’s winners, all of which once again demonstrate the sheer range of talent in the capital.”
